Le Caire is located in the Grand Vallon valley, 25 kms north-east of Sisteron. From the north (Gap) quit the N85 at Monêtier-Allemont and take the D104 – Claret – Melve – La Motte – Le Caire.
From the south, autoroute A51, exit Sisteron Sud and take the D951– La Motte – Le Caire.
Parking area for the via beside the road about 1 km beyond Le Caire.
To the start of the viaferrata Ten minutes walk along the path from the parking area (Les Cheminées) Viaferrata climbingCollect a leaflet at the start; it will give you the details of all the vias in the area. They are short, testing, fun and very well equipped; for anyone in good shape – some passages are quite demanding. Exhilarating exposure on some pitches.
Possible options:
Short route: lets you reach the footbridge rapidly and then exit to avoid the Bombu stretch (which is hard on the arms) and the summit of the Grande Fistoire. It is a little exposed, but nothing serious.
Long route: the complete Grande Fistoire via including the footbridge and the Nepalese bridge. This section is very strenuous with a 50-metre overhang – La Grande Muraille. The final pitch is short but intense – a descending overhang. Keep some energy in reserve for this passage.
