From Geneva, take the highway towards Lausanne and Sion. From Chamonix and Aosta, take the road to Martigny, and there get onto the highway towards Sion. At Sion, take the second highway exit (Hôpital) then take a left and at the second island go towards Vex, Val d'Hérens. This leads you to Evolène. By Train
Train to Sion and from there by bus. For train and bus schedules and prices, enquire CFF.
To the start of the viaferrata Do not enter Evolène village, but stay on the road towards Arolla, 200 m after the Coop (food store), stop at a small parking lot on your left. The trail goes up towards the trees, fully marked, to the foot of the cliff. For the ‘easy’ variant (Vire des Chamois) take the path up to the right.
Viaferrata climbing
The first overhang is hard on the arms, so it’s best to warm up beforehand! The next section is no easier, and shorter climbers might find some of the moves a long stretch. This is probably the crux, and higher up it’s not so strenuous. If preferred, you can get off and do the Via Nax instead. If you decide to carry on, the next section includes some rock-climbing followed by a ladder, then you find the first escape route: Le Mélèze.
Vire des Chamois The second section, « La Vire des Chamois », is a simple traverse to the start of the final section. The escape route at Le Mélèze allows you to miss the final section.
Le Grand Mur This superb 130 metre wall has it all: it’s overhanging, it’s strenuous, it’s very exposed and on a hot day it’s a sweat. For climbers with proven ability only. So…if in doubt, hire a guide. The guides from Evolène are as competent and reliable as all Swiss guides – and that’s saying a lot.The descent from the top of the Grand Mur, with the Dent Blanche filling the view, is splendid (see photo). An easy path – but take care anyway!
